The company said that 'Reliance Jio
has come across reports in media and other websites about the existence of
purported JioCoin Apps on the Internet that are soliciting investments in
cryptocurrencies from people.'
'Reliance Jio would like to inform
the public and media that there are no such apps offered by the company or its
affiliates/ associates. Any such apps using the JioCoin name are fake, and
people are advised to refrain from dealing with any of them,' Jio statement
added.
The statement further added,
'Reliance Jio takes a serious note of such fraudulent attempts by unscrupulous
persons to misguide the public in the name of Jio and reserves the right to
take appropriate legal recourse.' In fact, Google has also removed more than
700,000 apps from Google Play Store in 2017.
Budget 2018: Smartphones prices to go up marginally
The Union Budget 2018 was just
announced today and it looks like mobile handsets will become more expensive.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced a hike in customs duty on mobile
phones to 20 percent from 15 percent. 'Customs duty on import of mobile phone
parts will be increased to 20 percent from the existing 15 percent. This will
boost jobs in the smartphone sector in India,' Jaitley said during his Union
Budget speech. In December, the government had increased customs duty on
various items including mobile phones to 15 percent from 10 percent.
In a bid to further help domestic
smartphone manufacturers, the government has also proposed to impose a 2
percent special additional duty (SAD) on imports of populated printed circuit
boards (PCB) used for mobile phones.
Well, with this the price of mobile
handsets could go up marginally by at least 1 percent as the government has now
proposed to levy higher customs duty on a component that makes up more than a
fourth of the cost of making a phone.
However, the government has stated
that the move has been put forward in order to 'provide adequate protection to
domestic industry' and that it will benefit local manufacturers of PCBs. As
such, PCB is one of the most critical elements in mobile phone manufacturing.
Reportedly, Samsung is the only manufacturer that populates PCBs in India, and
the company could likely benefit the most from the duty change. 'This is aimed
at incentivizing manufacturing of PCB locally, which is a major step towards
bringing value addition to India.'

TRAI reduces mobile number portability charges from Rs.
19 to Rs. 4
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India (TRAI) has now decided to slash the mobile number portability (MNP) rate
for telecom operators. The agency has now brought down the price to Rs. 4 per
successful porting from the earlier rate which was Rs. 19. TRAI arrived at the
decision after taking into consideration the comments and requests received
from the industry stakeholders.
A statement issued by the TRAI said
it would come into effect from the date of official Gazette notification. Under
the MNP regime, a subscriber can retain the existing mobile telephone number
while switching from one service provider to another or from one technology to
another technology of the same service provider.
It allows subscribers to retain
their mobile number not only within the same Licensed Service Area (LSA) but
also pan India in any LSA.
After observing a significant
decline in the per port transaction cost, the sectoral regulator decided to
slash the price. 'After reviewing the financial results of both the MNP Service
Providers and the upsurge in the volume of porting requests in the past two
years, the Authority opined that the present charge of Rs. 19 is quite high as
compared to cost and volumes of transaction involved,' the statement said.
'In several instances, the operators
were bearing this cost on behalf of the customers approaching them for the
port-in. Hence, it will be beneficial for both customers and operators as the
cost of porting will be greatly reduced,' said Rajan S. Mathews, Director
General, Cellular Operators' Association of India.
'Operators have been requesting Trai
to bring down this charge as the MNP transaction has increased manifold since
the inception of MNP. In several instances, the operators were bearing this
cost on behalf of the customers approaching them for port-in. Hence, it will be
beneficial for both customers and operators as the cost of porting will be
greatly reduced,' he added.
Apple stops signing older versions of iOS 11: What
this means for users?
Apple has now stopped signing three
previous versions of its mobile Operating System iOS following the release of
iOS 11.2.5 last week. What this basically means is that iPhone users will now
not be able to downgrade to a lower version of iOS after installing a new
version on their devices. 'For instance, prior to today, a user running iOS
11.2.5 would have been able to downgrade to either 11.2, iOS 11.2.1, or iOS
11.2.2 through iTunes. That downgrading window is now closed.
The iPhone maker has particularly
stopped signing iOS 11.2, iOS 11.2.1 and iOS 11.2.2 for all its devices.
It routinely stops signing older
versions of software updates after new releases come out in order to encourage
users to keep their operating systems up-to-date. So iPhone users might have no
choice but to upgrade to the latest version and enjoy all the new features.
Apple just rolled out iOS 11.2.5
last week with Siri enhancements, official support for the smart speaker
HomePod and a host of bug fixes and performance improvements. Coinciding with
the public release of iOS 11.2.5, the Cupertino-based giant started beta
testing iOS 11.3, which includes features such as new Animoji, iMessages in the
Cloud, AirPlay 2 including others. So this move from the company seems natural.
Meanwhile, 'this spring, iOS 11.3
will deliver exciting new ways to experience Augmented Reality on iPhone and
iPad, new Animoji on iPhone X and the ability to view health records in the
Health app,' Apple had said in a statement. A major feature in the update will
be to show battery health and recommend when a battery needs to be serviced.
Users can also see if the power
management feature - first introduced in iOS 10.2.1 - is on and can choose to
turn it off, the company said. This feature is available for devices such as
iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6s,iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and
iPhone 7 Plus.
